Menopause or Primary Ovarian Insufficiency? What to know.

Menopause or Primary Ovarian Insufficiency? What to know.

Try BINTO fertility supplements (like CoQ1o) to support ovulation and egg quality.

Premature menopause can happen at any point in a woman’s life- whether she has a family or hasn’t even started thinking about having kids. This condition, also called Premature Ovarian Failure (POF), impacts 1 in every 100 women between the ages of 30-39 and 1 in every 1000 women from ages 15-29 (1).

Early Menopause- what it means

The female body ovulates (releases an egg from the ovaries) once a month. Us ladies are born with about 2 million ovarian follicles, but age and puberty drops the number to 300,000- 400,000 follicles that can potentially mature into eggs (1). That’s all we get- no more. (In order to promote healthy ovulation and support the quality of matured eggs, we recommend taking a C0Q10 supplement- an antioxidant that prevents damage from free radicals).

POF happens before the age of 40, on average around 27.

Is POF different from menopause?

Yes! When a woman goes through menopause, she no longer has any follicles left in her ovaries. She can’t get a period or become pregnant. Women with POF have follicles but they may not function properly, or they don’t have as many as other women do.

Some healthcare providers characterize this condition as Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) instead of POF. The term “failure” makes it seem like the ovaries can’t function at all, when in reality, you can still get a period. Though it isn't super likely, there is also a chance of getting pregnant even if you are diagnosed with POF.

How do I know if I have POF?

Irregular periods are a sign of POF, as well as: hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, painful sex, vaginal dryness, and lack of sex drive (1). Some people don’t always show symptoms, so, we recommend getting your follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels tested in order to be diagnosed. FSH is what triggers the follicles to form into mature eggs. If the follicles don’t mature, then there won’t be a production of estrogen to stop FSH. That’s why high levels of FSH are an indicator of POF.

What are my options if I’m diagnosed with POF?

Unfortunately, there aren’t many successful treatment options for premature ovarian failure. There has been some hope with Hormone Replacement Therapy in helping women get pregnant. If you’re looking to have a baby, fertility treatments and donor eggs can be another solution (1).
